WHY TRIODES?

Tetrodes are fine tubes, but they are few and far between. The YL1050 series work fine at 1296 MHz. You will pay about $350.00 for one. The TH327 is about $450.00. Both are for out of service pulls. Without a comprehensive circuit for control and screen grid over-current, over drive protection, and plate flash-over, you are taking a big chance on destroying your tube. The same does apply for a 7289 triode, BUT you can still find these tubes starting at $5.00! 95% of the time you will only lose 1 tube on the multiple tube amps. Even if you paid $25.00 per tube and lost one, your eyes will most likely not start watering! So if you are interested in power on the 23 cm band drop me a e-mail at the address shown below.

KB2AH 1296 Mhz RF Decks

RF decks do not include cabinets, panels, rack mounting hardware, metering, tubes, bias supply, filament supply, HV supply or mounting brackets. RF decks are pre-tested ready for tubes, mounting, and supplies. I do supply schematics for bias circuit, and recommended filament voltages, metering, and HV connections. HV supplies can be obtained from the ARRL Handbook. It is suggested all tubes in all amps be water cooled, as plate dissipation far exceeds manufacturers specifications. All RF decks must be put in a shielded cabinet for stray RF. A interlock system should be employed for HV safety.

General Information:

All amplifiers from TPS come with a 100% guarantee to perform as specified, or money back. Four totally new designs in 1296 amplifiers are available: 1-tube, 2-tube, 4-tube , and 6-tube. All amplifiers use 7289's, 7815's, 8907's, or Y480's. All amplifiers will tune from 1260 to 1300 Mhz. TUBES NOT INCLUDED.

2-, 4-, and 6-tube RF decks are cavity input and cavity output, and tubes must be individually biased. Input and output coupling is fixed for easier operation, except 1- and 2-tube amplifiers use input coupling. All amplifiers load into a 50 ohm load with ease. No tuner is needed on input or output circuits, as in the UPX design to attain maximum output or to match driver input. The amplifiers are built from solid pieces of aluminum and brass. There are no thin wall parts that can cause thermal runaway. Filament and cathode connections are machined from brass, not made from finger stock. In turn you get better DC and RF connections. All finger stock is silver-plated and soldered with silver solder.

Tuning of all amplifiers is very stable; tune once and leave it alone as long as drive and voltages are the same. Amplifiers are very stable and do not tend to oscillate.

RF deck mounting is accomplished by way of 1/4-20 threaded studs from the bottom of the amplifier, and are easily mounted in a rack, horizontally or vertically on a chassis. With only input and output cavity resonating, arrangement of controls on the outside of a rack panel can be accomplished quite easily. Schematics for bias, filament, metering cathode, plate, and grid are included.

Rated output depends on the quality of the tubes used. All tubes must be closely matched, and MUST be water cooled. Air cooling of cathode and anode cavities is also required for the 4-tube and the 6-tube amplifiers. Filament, cathode, and grid connections can easily reach temperatures of 200 degrees Celsius under full output or untuned conditions.

All amplifiers are pre-tuned for 1296 Mhz with my tubes. If you purchase a TPS amplifier I will, at your request, tune the amplifier with your tubes.

FM or ATV operation use only 50% of rated output power.

NOTICE!

None of my amps are for the beginner! THESE AMPS ARE NOT PUT-PLUG-IN-AND-TRANSMIT. 1296 IS NOT LIKE HF!

Plate bypass capacitors are at B+ potential! DO NOT OPERATE AMPLIFIERS OUTSIDE OF A SUITABLE ENCLOSURE. Bias, HV, and drive is very critical to attain maximum output. Driver must be tuned to meet input matching of amplifier. An untunedcavity is subject to arc over and damage to bypass capacitors, tubes, and tuning capacitors. Tubes should abe closely matched to get rated output of amplifier.
